5 Strokes and Maneuvering Practice Strokes and Maneuvering Practice July 5, 2026 9:30 am - 12:30 pm Big Lagoon County Park, 510 Big Lagoon Park Rd, Trinidad, CA 95570, USA Sign up using the link below. Please sign up by 6:00PM the night before (7/4). Parking pass or $5.00 required at the parking lot. https://forms.gle/F9c6F4LjqE89qMdUA Meet at 9:00AM in the parking lot near the boat ramp. On the water by 9:30AM after helping each other get boats off vehicles and down to the shoreline. Come join us for a Post-Independence Day practice and paddle on the warm, quiet and serene waters of Big Lagoon. Longtime member and ACA sea kayak instructor Scott Hagerty will demonstrate and assist you with perfecting numerous paddle strokes and boat maneuvering used to more efficiently and safely make turns in a variety of wind and ocean conditions. He will break down each stroke and boat edging, discussing what is happening with your body, boat and blade. You will leave this practice session more confident in your boat, and be able to impress any/all onlookers with your boat handling abilities! Additionally, we'll also go for a paddle, likely making our way up toward Maple Creek area, applying all that we have learned. We will be back at the parking lot around 12:30. Pull out your sack lunch and cold beverages for a social gathering after a wonderful morning on the water. Consider swimsuit and towel and go for a swim too! Please bring your seaworthy kayaks (with flotation or bulkheads), and other normal kayak gear. Consider wetsuit or drysuit, or layering (no cotton) and splash/rain top. Kayak Game Day at Big Lagoon — July 12 Come play on the water with your ENC crew! We're heading to Big Lagoon for an afternoon of kayak shenanigans, friendly competition, and good food. On the agenda: Kayak Limbo — How low can you (and your bow) go? Dead Fish Polo — Paddles down, limp fish energy only Chariot Races — Team up and see whose crew has the horsepower (or paddle-power) After the games, we'll fire up the BBQ and hang out on shore. Bring something to throw on the grill, a side to share, BYOB and your best trash-talk. All skill levels welcome — this is about fun, not form. This trip will include (all optional) paddling on Tomales Bay, paddling around Drake's Estero (sharks & rays!), surf play at Drake's Beach, and Yellow Bluffs (SF Bay) is only an hour away. In addition, there are amazing biking trails and hiking trails throughout the region. Pt. Reyes Station (2 miles away) has great shops, restaurants and pubs. The whole Point Reyes National Seashore also has great picnic areas, visitor centers, and the Pt. Reyes Lighthouse (313 steps!!!!). This will be a super fun extended weekend for paddlers, and non-paddling family members. We currently have 4 adjacent sites reserved at Olema Campground. 3 Tents and one RV (claimed, but room for an extra tent or two). The tent sites include 2 people, but will accept up to six people per site, so you can claim your own for about $40/night, or share. There is one site in our contingency which (as of 3/23) is available for a pull-in RV. Reach out if you have such a vehicle & want it to be added to the group reservation. Inside Tomales Bay and Drake's Estero are pretty protected, so suitable for most paddlers and watercraft.
